Fluoride Sealants

Many researchers over the years have shown the benefit of dental sealants in preventing decay in young people.  These plastic sealants were very technique sensitive and often showed signs of leakage over time, however.  By the time the leak was detectable, large cavities had formed under the sealant.   Newer products have incorporated fluoride into the sealant itself.  Weaker newly erupted teeth take up fluoride over time which strengthens them and makes them less susceptible to decay.  These newer sealants are placed over the biting surface of teeth, making them easier to maintain and now having the added benefit of releasing fluoride into the tooth.  They are of particular benefit in high caries risk children.  Ask us if this new development in prevention is right for your child!
